Whedon Needs Limits

This is the problem I have with Joss Whedon right here. All his properties are about loss of innocence and coming of age, and it just doesn’t work in an American TV show where the main story line can never be resolved and the characters can never quite get there. It worked in Dr. Horrible. Maybe with The Avengers, Whedon will break into movies and do shorter, closed story lines that actually work.

Not sure that applies to Firefly/Serenity. Any innocence Mal had was lost long before we meet him. You might be able to make that argument about River but she’s not the central character and her story isn’t so much about coming of age but trying to find what she’s lost.

I count that kind of longing, searching, out of place, trying to fit in trope as part of coming of age. It’s probably something separate, but I never went to film school.

Joss says that his stories are like life, open ended.
Seen it in Angel’s 5th season extras.
